The defence, which was a conglomeration of self-defence and provocation, failed to carry any conviction,
and the verdict was, in my opinion, the only proper one on the evidence.
It is a case of an unpremeditated savage attack by a man whose self-control had gone for no sufficient reason. There was, however, no previous ill-feeling between murderer and victim; the killing was the result of a sudden wild impulse, and in all the circumstances, and in view of the condemned man's youth, I think this is a case in which Your Excellency might well grant a reprieve and substitute a sentence of imprisonment for life.
